Notes from the Ceremony

School of Logic & Rhetoric Dean, David Leach, delivered the Commencement Homily. Inspired by C.S. Lewis’s “The Great Divorce,” Leach shared a valuable message to graduates, stressing that “there is but one good; that is God.” He urged the class to distinguish between what is truly good and what is merely fun, emphasizing that choosing the path of good aligns with the way of Jesus. Mr. Leach cautioned against succumbing to external pressures defining goodness, highlighting the world, personal desires, and the enemy as influential forces. The speech left the graduates with a powerful reminder that choosing God’s definition of goodness is choosing God Himself.

Following Mr. Leach, Simeon Swick presented the Salutatory Address, highlighting the transformative power of suffering and encouraging a positive response to hardships through reliance on timeless truths from the Bible. Swick drew inspiration from the school’s annual theme verse, James 1:12, demonstrating the importance of remaining steadfast under trial. He also emphasized building a strong foundation on trust in the Lord and concluded by urging his fellow classmates to embrace suffering as an opportunity for positive change and growth.

Camryn Kim, in the Valedictory Address, expressed gratitude and reflected on the group’s educational journey, acknowledging the pivotal role of classmates, teachers, and parents. Kim encouraged her fellow graduates to “work hard, play hard, and do nothing.” The concept of working hard was underscored with examples from her classmates who pursued their passions and aspirations with dedication. The importance of playing hard was emphasized as a means of creating valuable memories and preventing burnout. The unconventional advice of “doing nothing” was explained as a necessity for rest and quiet time with God. Concluding her address, Kim underscored the importance of striking a harmonious equilibrium between the elements of hard work, play, and moments of quiet reflection. The speech, a blend of gratitude, humor, and practical advice, aptly captured the essence of the Class of 2023’s transformative journey at Paideia Academy.
